FRA/as – The first construction phase for expanding Antalya Airport (AYT) on the Turkish Mediterranean coast has been successfully concluded. The dedicated project company established by Fraport AG and TAV Airports Holding required less than three years of construction work to expand the international Terminal 2 by 132,000 square meters and add 38,000 square meters to the domestic terminal. Last year more than 38 million passengers used the airport. This represented an increase of about 6.5 percent compared to 2023, setting a new all-time record.
Fraport CEO, Dr. Stefan Schulte, said: "The opening of the additional terminal areas is a milestone for us in strengthening Antalya's position as the leading holiday airport in the Mediterranean region. The new infrastructure enables us to meet the rapidly increasing demand for air travel to the Turkish Riviera. This construction project – our Group's third-largest so far, after Terminal 3 in Frankfurt and the new terminal in Lima – has been a remarkable success. We have once again demonstrated our ability to implement complex, demanding projects in a very short timeframe."
TAV Airports CEO, Serkan Kaptan, said “We are proud to complete the massive expansion project at Antalya Airport, Türkiye’s second busiest hub in terms of international traffic. This investment will significantly elevate the passenger experience and provide the capacity for further traffic growth, contributing to the development of the region. Through our successful partnership with Fraport, and in collaboration with our stakeholders, we will continue to work towards realizing the full potential of Antalya.”
Travelers can also look forward to a new range of food offerings in the expanded terminal areas. For this purpose, Fraport teamed up with an airport food specialist to establish a new joint venture called “Best Food for All” (BFA). This is the first time that the company is also taking responsibility for operating restaurants at Antalya.
“We currently offer our guests at Antalya Airport a wide variety of cuisines in 29 restaurants, ranging from snacks and international chains all the way to local Turkish specialties. One thing is sure: passengers can look forward to world-famous Turkish hospitality in all of the restaurants,” said Denitza Weismantel, who represents Fraport on BFA’s supervisory board.
In addition to expanding the terminal areas, the first phase has involved projects to build additional apron facilities such as taxiways and a new parking facility. The plans for the next stage of construction call for handing over a new air traffic control tower to the Turkish authorities by the end of 2026. Through a dedicated project company, Fraport AG and TAV Airports Holding have successfully concluded the first construction phase in accordance with the concession agreement. A total of about 850 million euros was invested in the airport.
The expansion of Antalya Airport is part of a plan to establish the region as an attractive year-round travel destination, boasting abundant sports and cultural offerings beyond the traditional summer season. Visitors to the Turkish Mediterranean coast are drawn not only by 300 sunny days a year but also by globally unique historical sites, such as the ancient Roman theater at Aspendos. Currently, more than 100 airlines offer flights from AYT to nearly 250 destinations.
Fraport AG has already been active at Antalya for over two decades. Since assuming this role in 1999, the company has succeeded in consolidating and expanding the airport’s importance as a gateway for international tourism in the Mediterranean region. Within the scope of a public bidding process, in 2021 Fraport AG and its partner TAV Airports Holding received the contract for a new concession until the end of 2051. The operational phase of this new concession for Antalya Airport will start on January 1, 2027, and run for 25 years. It comprises operation of the terminal and other landside infrastructure, including retail areas, parking management, and the passenger security checkpoints.
