Retail and catering benefit from the energy of the air traffic hub whilst also shaping the airport’s unique character. Various marketplaces perfectly integrated into the airport architecture are positioned in a central location along the pedestrian routes, in the pre-security and post-security zones. Sector and space concepts are specifically geared towards traffic and passenger structures. Opening hours
– seven days a week – are aligned with the first and last departure times. Some outlets and Frankfurt Airport Online Shopping enable shopping around the clock. All this ensures above-average revenue per square meter for retailers.
Retail and catering with international guests
The airport setting provides a wonderful environment for retail and catering. In the fast-paced world of international aviation, affluent guests travel via Frankfurt Airport to destinations in Germany, Europe, and worldwide – creating lots of opportunities for businesses to meet their needs. Terminals 1 and 2 boast marketplaces with 295 different restaurants and bars. In addition, Frankfurt Airport’s online trading platform sets out the shopping facilities digitally so that, in conjunction with our rewards scheme, all passengers can access them even before arrival at the airport.
Our guests can shop to their hearts’ content in the international departures areas. Beyond the boarding card and security checks, there are international luxury brands and selected regional retail and catering concepts in a space covering 22,500 square meters. A hand-picked selection of elegant shops and boutiques awaits our cosmopolitan target groups. To whet our passengers’ appetites, there is a wide range of concepts from upscale restaurants and caviar bars
to international cafés and fast-food outlets. Each marketplace thus maintains its own distinct character and invites guests to enjoy the exclusive ambiance and discover outstanding products while waiting for their flight.
The publicly accessible marketplaces Shopping Avenue and Shopping Boulevard are situated in Terminal 1 at departures level. Shopping Avenue contains various shops and centrally located catering facilities – some of which overlook the
maneuvering area. In Shopping Boulevard, there are international brands and a relaxed atmosphere. In the public area of Terminal 1, shopping facilities are supplemented by the Airport City Mall. This mall links the parking garages, the regional railway station, and the arrivals and departures levels. The car rental center with all hire car providers are also based here.
In the public area of Terminal 2, Shopping Plaza enables airport guests to shop near the Visitors’ Terrace. In the Food Plaza, with its restaurants and cafés, the expansive facade provides a panoramic view of the airport site. The Food Plaza is an attraction for travelers and visitors alike. Along with passengers, numerous guests and airport employees are among the customers in all pre-security areas of both terminals.
With guests from Asia, America, and Europe, Frankfurt Airport has the highest proportion of international transfer passengers of all European airports. On average, they spend around two hours at the airport, and often longer, which is
great news for retailers: they have time to wander around, explore, shop, eat, and drink. The wide range of target groups at the airport are drawn from business and leisure travelers from all continents. The various nationalities have different purchasing habits. For instance, our Chinese personal shoppers provide additional shopping assistance in Chinese. The varied consumption tastes of the many German, European, and American passengers generate a wide
variety of business opportunities for retailers and caterers.

participating retail partners on the digital platform up to 24 hours in advance, and collect and pay for them at the respective shop on the day of departure. Some partners provide the option of online payment and home delivery. It will also be possible in future to collect deliveries at the gate, at defined collection points at the airport, or in a lounge. This enables passengers to save time and enjoy their own individual airport shopping experience. Retail partners benefit from extensive marketing and targeted sales promotion measures that make their merchandise visible and available regardless of location. Frankfurt Airport Online Shopping is available via all channels in German, English, and Chinese.
There are great opportunities for generating substantial revenue at Frankfurt Airport. However, getting up and running involves major challenges. Competition for our
coveted retail space is reserved for the very best: well-financed retail and catering companies with creative ideas and a real enthusiasm for the location. An attractive design of the outlet is just as essential as high-quality shop fitting that complies with the airport’s specific safety standards. The product range must be highly flexible so that it meets the needs of international customers. Our guests expect attentiveness, which is why service-oriented staff
with outstanding language skills are so important. In addition, the airport’s opening hours – from Monday to Sunday – require a considered approach to personnel deployment. Airport retailing demands considerable dedication, but pays off with high returns.
The Path to Partnering with us
The number one address for new business contacts and existing concessionaires—currently about 100—is the Airport Retailing department of Fraport AG. It coordinates all planning and activities in connection with retailing operations at the airport. Fraport only invites first-rate applicants with extensive retailing or food & beverage expertise and experience to join the competition for available concessions. Category management teams with appropriate expertise support them through the recruitment, bidding, and planning stages. This process normally takes up to two years. When new concessionaires have been accepted and start operating, Airport Retailing works with them closely in a spirit of partnership. The provided support includes market and customer analyses as well as ongoing quality management to maximize their business success.
